Position: Youth Garden Intern (16 – 35 years of age)
Work Hours: 20 hours/week
Compensation: $18/hour
Contract: 6 months, permanent extension possible pending funding Closing Date: May 6, 2024
Job Description
Join our exciting team of gardeners and learn about Seed Keeping! The Youth Garden Intern will work and learn directly with the KSSLC Garden Manager. The successful candidate will learn aspects of cultivating and curating the collection of Indigenous and Heirloom Seeds held by the Kenhté:ke Seed Sanctuary while on the job.
Duties and Responsibilities
- ❖ Garden maintenance, which may include mowing, weeding, watering, planting, harvesting, pruning, etc.
- ❖ Observe, identify and complete work that needs to be done in the garden
- ❖ Lead volunteers as required
- ❖ Support ongoing research and documentation of the collection
- ❖ Maintain the tidiness of the garden and tool areas
- ❖ Participate in outreach activities and events hosted by the organization
- ❖ Support the ongoing goals and mission of the organization
- ❖ Any other tasks as required Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- ❖ Team-driven focus with accomplishing garden work and projects. Ability to work independently on assigned garden tasks once necessary training has been provided
- ❖ Must have class G driver’s license, own vehicle, with valid insurance
❖ Knowledge of Rotinonsyon:ni culture and Kanyen’keha (Mohawk language) is an asset
Working Conditions
This position is a physically active position that requires working outside in various weather conditions. The Garden Assistant must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, to bend at the knees and hips, and to lift at least 30 pounds overhead. They must also be able to physically exert themselves for at least three (3) hours, using heavy garden implements such as tillers, mowers, hoes and shovels. Must have safety boots and hearing protection.
This position is a part-time position that requires flexible hours. Some evening & weekend hours may be required.
